The ANSI/UL1709 Rapid Rise Fire Test is specific to Hydrocarbon-based fires which can occur in petrochemical and similar industrial facilities. Unlike the cellulosic-based fires, which are evaluated in accordance with test method ANSI//UL 263, ASTM E-119, which reaches a temperature of 2000°F (1093°C) over a period of 4 hours, the ANSI/UL1709 test method reaches 2000°F after five minutes and maintains that temperature over the duration of the test.
Both time-temperature curves are recognized in providing a relationship with fireproofing systems in terms of hydrocarbon fires. These curves are typical fire test curves referenced in the protection of systems related to petroleum and petrochemical processing plants.
However, each time-temperature curve reaches a different critical temperature limit. BS476 is globally recognized and dictates that the time temperature curve reaches a temperature of 1731°F (944°C) after 5 minutes. UL 1709 specifies that the fire test curve reaches temperatures of 2000°F (1093°C) after 5 minutes.
Other tests conducted to measure fire endurance include Factory Mutual 4971 and GASAFE for LPG Storage Vessels, Lloyd’s Register Jet Fire Test, Three Bar Blast Overpressure, and Rijkswaterstaat for tunnels.
CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II provides predictable performance under fire. It is approximately one-third the weight of concrete, thus reducing dead loads, and therefore requires lighter and less expensive structural steel. CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II is more resistant to cracking and spalling compared to concrete. It prevents concrete spalling under impact and thermal shock and is more resistant to effects of deluge water. If damage to the spray fireproofing system occurs, repair is quick and easy and traditionally do not require unit shut-down which can result in loss of production.
These thicknesses are listed within the UL Fire Resistance Directory
or within specific Independent Third-Party test reports.
CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II has been the preferred choice worldwide for over thirty years with over tens of million of bags installed within commercial, tunnel, manufacturing, petrochemical and other similar industrial facilities globally.
CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II is a single package material which requires only water as an activator. CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II is applied using a rotor stator type pump utilizing water and compressed air. CAFCO FENDOLITE TG is the trowel grade version which is applied using common masonry tools. You can find out more information on equipment by visiting our Equipment & Accessories Section.
Isolatek International is the only fireproofing manufacturer with a Global Network of licensed professional installers. The thorough training we provide ensures that the job is done correctly with maximum attention to quality and safety. The installers are experienced and have earned the trust of contractors and engineers throughout the world.
In addition to surface cleaning and other preparation, there are a wide variety of application techniques utilizing metal lath, hexagonal mesh, corner bead, and various fastening methods. In addition, once the application of the fireproofing is complete, several finishing processes including water shedding, caulking, expansion joints and topcoating are used depending on the particular area of petrochemical facility that is being protected. These techniques are detailed within our Application Techniques
section of our website.
Corner bead is not required, however it is recommended to achieve square and sturdy edges on columns and beams. Corner beads can also be used as an aide to create expansion joints.
Yes, Isolatek International offers a complete system utilizing CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II as the basis of fire protection for both cut and cover and bored tunnels. This system has been extensively tested and exceeds the requirements set forth by the International standard Rijkwaterstaat (RWS) fire curve.
A topcoat is not necessary, however, a portland cement compatible topcoat is recommended in order to ensure long term durability, particularly in corrosive environments and where long term freezing and thawing of water may occur.
Yes, CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II is the preferred choice worldwide for use in Petrochemical, Tunnels and other heavy industrial facilities from the North Slope oil fields of North America to the Southern tip of South America;from Europe and Asia to the Middle East, Africa, and Australia; there is not any geographical location where CAFCO FENDOLITE M-II isn’t in use.
It is an industry standard for Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials (SFRMs) that the temperature at the job site must be greater than 40°F (4°C). A minimum substrate and ambient temperature of 40°F (4°C) shall be maintained prior to, during, and for a minimum of 24 hours after the application. If necessary, tarp enclosures and temporary heat may be utilized to maintain the proper temperature and humidity levels in the application areas.
