The ANSI/UL1709 Rapid Rise Fire Test is specific to Hydrocarbon-based fires which can occur in petrochemical and similar industrial facilities. Unlike the cellulosic-based fires, which are evaluated in accordance with test method ANSI//UL 263, ASTM E-119, which reaches a temperature of 2000°F (1093°C) over a period of 4 hours, the ANSI/UL1709 test method reaches 2000°F after five minutes and maintains that temperature over the duration of the test.
Both time-temperature curves are recognized in providing a relationship with fireproofing systems in terms of hydrocarbon fires. These curves are typical fire test curves referenced in the protection of systems related to petroleum and petrochemical processing plants.
However, each time-temperature curve reaches a different critical temperature limit. BS476 is globally recognized and dictates that the time temperature curve reaches a temperature of 1731°F (944°C) after 5 minutes. UL 1709 specifies that the fire test curve reaches temperatures of 2000°F (1093°C) after 5 minutes.
Other tests conducted to measure fire endurance include Factory Mutual 4971 and GASAFE for LPG Storage Vessels, Lloyd’s Register Jet Fire Test, Three Bar Blast Overpressure, and Rijkswaterstaat for tunnels.
ISOLATEK TYPE M-II provides predictable performance under fire. It is approximately one-third the weight of concrete, thus reducing dead loads, and therefore requires lighter and less expensive structural steel. ISOLATEK TYPE M-II is more resistant to cracking and spalling compared to concrete. It prevents concrete spalling under impact and thermal shock and is more resistant to effects of deluge water. If damage to the spray fireproofing system occurs, repair is quick and easy and traditionally do not require unit shut-down which can result in loss of production.

Corner bead is not required, however it is recommended to achieve square and sturdy edges on columns and beams. Corner beads can also be used as an aide to create expansion joints.

It is an industry standard for Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials (SFRMs) that the temperature at the job site must be greater than 40°F (4°C). A minimum substrate and ambient temperature of 40°F (4°C) shall be maintained prior to, during, and for a minimum of 24 hours after the application. If necessary, tarp enclosures and temporary heat may be utilized to maintain the proper temperature and humidity levels in the application areas.
